After extensive research I still cannot come up with the correct answer. =/ I've found what looks to be correct and then it is not.

  1. "Septicamea" is, for the most part, a series of systemic infections that occur when the passive transfer of immunities from mother to foal fails.  (For instance, an orphan who does not receive colostrum, or a fescue mare who didn't bag)

    Without aggressive treatment, it is fatal.

    With aggressive treatment, the mortality rate is very high.

    I bottle raised a septic foal.  He survived sound, and it was a miracle.
