  1. either A or D

  2. My knowledge of American history in general is not really good enough to give an objective answer, but, I did read something about, when the Mormons settled in Deseret Territory, those who went out and started farms would form themselves into little farming communities by putting all their houses together (within walking distance of each other) in the center of where all their lands were. That way, when the men went out to work the land, the rest of their families were together, and not alone out in the middle of no where, vulnerable to Indians, outlaws, and especially anti-Mormons who back then thought of Mormons as no better than animals and had no problems just killing them as if they were nothing. Sort of like circling the wagons.
