Question:

Which of these internet download speeds is faster?

So I've recently moved into a new apartment and I need to get internet.

Right now I'm trying to decide between getting DSL from AT&T or a Cable Modem from Time Warner.

My problem is I don't know how much of a different there truly is in speed.

Time Warner claims to give a downstream speed of 5000 Kbps.

While AT&T and their fastest DSL option claims to give up to

6.0 Mbps in download speed.

Ok, so one is Kbps and the other is Mbps, which one is truly faster and by how much?

Time Warner will cost $44.95 after the first 6 months have gone by. While AT&T will always remain at $35.00

So which option is better? Cause I like to download plenty of stuff and I enjoy online gaming with my PC and with my 360 and PS3. So any help with this is highly appreciated.

  1. AT&T would be faster because Time Warner with 5000 Kbps transfers over to about 5 Mbps. AT&T would also be cheaper because the intro price doesn't go up.

  2. The math is that 1000 Kbps is equivalent to 1 Mbps (they are similar to meters and kilometers).  So, 6 Mbps (6000 Kbps) is faster than 5 Mbps (5000 Kbps).

  3. Well 5000kbps is 5.0mbps so the AT&T is a full 1.0mbps faster.  There was a time when AT&T was only 3.0mbps but the 6meg lines are very good and very solid!

  4. I have actually had both and my Cable Modem with Time Warner was a lot faster and more reliable.

  5. DSL is horrible and you're download speed has nothing to do with online gaming that's all upload. Get Time Warner. BUT if FIOS is available

    GET IT.

  6. well 6mb should pt out a max of 600kb/s and the 5000kbs should push out a max of 500kbs.  But it all depends on how far away from the exchange you are if you choose DSL, The further away, the slower your speeds will be.
