  1. Greater LA area about 10 million people

    Atlanta about 3 million.

  2. Los Angeles population (2007): 3,849,378

    Atlanta population (2007): 519,145

"all that i know is that atlanta has a little more than 5 million people, not counting it's suburbs."

Not true. Even the official City of Atlanta website  acknowledges that the population isn't anywhere near 5,000,000.

    http://www.atlantaga.gov/Visitors/Histor...

"In the past two decades Atlanta has experienced unprecedented growth -- the official city population remains steady, at about 420,000, but the metro population has grown in the past decade by nearly 40%, from 2.9 million to 4.1 million people."

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Atlanta has 519,145 people, not 5,000,000. The Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of 5,278,904. The Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area includes, obviously, the city of Atlanta, plus all of its suburbs, plus a whole lot more. In fact, The Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area includes the following counties (population in parenthesis):

    Barrow (67,139)

    Bartow (92,834)

    Butts (23,759)

    Carroll (111,954)

    Cherokee (204,363)

    Clayton (272,217)

    Cobb (691,905)

    Coweta (118,936)

    Dawson (21,484)

    DeKalb (737,093)

    Douglas (124,495)

    Fayette (106,144)

    Forsyth (158,914)

    Fulton (992,137)

    Gwinnett (776,380)

    Haralson (28,718)

    Heard (11,387)

    Henry (186,037)

    Jasper (13,660)

    Lamar (16,961)

    Meriwether (22,748)

    Newton (96,019)

    Paulding (127,906)

    Pickens (30,488)

    Pike (17,204)

    Rockdale (82,052)

    Spalding (62,826)

    Walton (83,144)

The Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area comprises an area of 8,376 square miles (a little smaller than the size of the entire state of New Jersey). So, even though the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of over 5,000,000, this is spread out over a fairly large area.

On the other hand, the city of Los Angeles has a population of 3,849,378. That does not include its suburbs. So, it is more than 7 times bigger than Atlanta. The Los Angeles Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of 12,875,587. The Los Angeles Statistical Area includes just two counties:

    Los Angeles (9,878,554)

    Orange (2,997,033)

The Los Angeles Metropolitan Statistical Area comprises an area of 5,700 square miles.

So, the Los Angeles Metropolitan Statistical Area has 12,875,587 people over 5,700 square miles, and the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of just 5,278,904 over 8,376 square miles.

The Los Angeles Metropolitan Statistical Area is nearly 2.5 times bigger than the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area, despite encompassing an area 2,676 square miles smaller.

Anyway you look at it, Los Angeles is much larger than Atlanta. Sorry.
