Actually, Peru comes from the Inca word "Viru" which was the name of a river. When the spanish conquerors arrived, they kept asking for the name of the place and the incas only answered Viru which was the name of the river basin where they were standing. Viru later became Peru for the conquerors.

The notes where the other answerer took the answer are not accurate. I lived 4 years in Peru, and not only worked there as a teacher but also graduated from Andean studies at Catholic University and the native american word for abundance is WALIQ - YUPA - ASHKA (any of those mean abundance). I studied Quechua (the language spoken by Incas) and I always check on the www.quechuanetwork.org for accuracy.
