Which of these two women is more likely to be raped?

This is NOT meant to offend anyone, it's just to get people using their common sense.

1) 40 years old, prefers nights in to nights out, doesn't drink or take drugs, dresses modestly, would never go back to a stranger's house either with or without the intention of having s*x.

2) 20 years old, goes out clubbing 4 times a week, likes to get very drunk and have casual s*x, dresses very revealingly.

Now, I know that both these women could get raped. but which one is it MORE LIKELY to happen to? of course, the fault is always with the rapist because he committed the crime, and in a perfect world women should be able to dress however they like with no negative consequences. but, the reality is that one of these women will attract much more attention, both good and bad, from men. how can anyone say that clothes dont matter?

blaming rape victims and encouraging women to be more responsible are NOT the same thing.

  1. So what's your point?

People who fly on airplanes for their jobs are more likely to die in an airplane crash than people who don't fly for their jobs.

And I do not believe there is ANY evidence that young, attractive women are more likely to be raped than plain, older or conservatively dressed women. Elderly women in bad nursing homes are one of the most vulnerable groups to rape. Is it because they are "hot"?

  2. I've never taken a drink in my life, I don't do drugs, I don't go out late, I've never set foot in a club or a bar and I dress modestly.

I know these things make me a bit safer but I'm sorry to say that if I did go to a bar or a club and dressed to show off my physical beauty I wouldn't be blaming myself at all if I was raped.

EDIT: No woman wants to be raped. I'm all for women keeping themselves out of danger but you have to realize that a lot of the time danger is very unpredictable and ultimately out of your complete control.

If all actions were dictated by an all consuming anxiety about being raped life would be miserable.

Maybe I should start covering my face and telling people I'm really 40 because men are too horny to know that I'm young. This would greatly reduce my chances of inciting their lust and make myself safer.

  3. There have been several rapes reported recently in my area: elderly women, who were in their homes.

You talk about "acting responsibly -- so no woman should ever go out, or if she's raped she "asked for it"? You're advocating house arrest for all women after dark (which includes working hours during the winter).

Women shouldn't be forbidden to go out dancing. And if they engage in casual s*x, that's their right. (Although not a provocative dresser generally, I used to go out, drink and dance, and sometimes have one night stands. I've never been raped. Now that I tend to stay home, I'm not safe from break-in rape.)

  4. Big Sky...i cudnt have said it better its common sense...another example

two men walking down the street...one has no money showing...the other has a big wad of cash sticking out of his pocket...who is likely to get mugged out of those two...the guy with the wad...now he doesnt intend on getting mugged but by "having it on display" as such he attract attention...why the h**l do you think u see guys jaws drop when a hot girl walks by wearing very little clothes as opposed to a girl where you cant see any skin at all

  5. Since rapists are opportunists, obviously the 2nd woman is at a greater risk. Not because of what she wears, or even because she drinks, but because she is out more.

People who "go out more" are more at risk for all sorts of things...car accidents, muggings, being struck by lightening.

I guess we should all just stay in to avoid rape, muggings, and lightening. Certainly there's nothing nothing you can do to STOP rape, muggings, and lightening, so let's just stay inside, K?

  6. Want the correct answer?  It's BOTH.  A woman (or man) can be raped at any time, any place, by almost any one for any reason.  Every rapist has a "type" whether it be a school marm w/ a beehive and cat's eyes glasses or a "spring break" co-ed or even a grade schooler waiting for the bus.

Your pathetic attempt to stir the pot reveals your true nature.  Why don't you go study and stop trying to get everyone else to do your sociology homework!

  7. Of course the second women is at a higher risk, especially because of her drinking.  But the first woman is not immune.

Understand the sensitivity that a lot of women have when someone seems to want to blame a rape victim for what happened to her. It's not been that many years since a woman could not expect to be believed if she had anything but a spotless sexual history.

  8. Actually, younger women are raped much more often than older women.  That has to do with several factors which are mostly social factors like alcohol and also just being out and about more than older women and married women.  Most of the time it is acquaintance rape and that type of rape occurs mostly among younger and single women.  But also it seems that strangers also pick younger women usually.  Stats are available at the RAINN site I linked below.

I was a victim of a rape 4 years ago.  I was 18.  I wasn't drunk and I was raped by someone I don't know at all.  Now, I was wearing shorts and a top when I was coming back to my cousin's apartment at night.  It was summer and it was hot.  Some people have told me that I should have been wearing something more modest than shorts and a light cotton top if I was going out alone and that I should have been more careful.  Really, I think that kind of opinion is definitely blaming the victim a bit.  I wasn't doing any of the other things you listed, just using the subway and walking back to the apartment building.  Should I really have to say to my self, 'no shorts or skirts today, I am gonna be walking alone'?  I don't think so, I refuse to live in fear and I think it is stretching it to say that in that circumstance that I should have been smarter.

  9. The 2O year old because she is practicing a lifestyle that is wreckless and attracts negative attention.

  10. You do realize that all people are going to say in response to this is, "Stop blaming the victim. The way you dress has nothing to do with it, even if she's naked, drunk, and prancing down rape ally in the night. Your saying she deserved it! Your taking the side of the rapist! Your encouraging rape! You believe in rape. Your probably are a rapist." Even though thats not what your saying at all.

On this issue, people don't care about the reality of this situation or common sense. They only care about being so sensitive to the victims that they ignore these simple facts that you pointed out.

They don't understand that no one is blaming the victim. No one is siding with the rapists. Your simply saying that some factors can either raise or lower your chances of being raped.

I'm gonna get a sea of thumbs down, and for each one that gives it to me can take the middle finger.

  11. The one that is first approached by a rapist???

Please do not blame the victim.

  12. The one who gets in the rapists path first.  You are warped!

And these women what did they do?   Their husbands had the audacity to die?

"In 1998, David Burdette targeted victims by combing through obituary notices for recent widows. He was arrested while breaking into a Millard woman's house. "'

  13. You are saying that you are not blaming the victim but what Are you trying to say?

I can agree with you that being impaired and in a risky situation is not a good idea. But one's s*x life and preferences in dress are not the issue. Having to change such personal things in the hope you are less visible a target for rapists is not being more "responsible", it is being scared and intimidated.

And the risk of being raped is still there anyway. Most girls and women who are raped know the rapist. And stranger rapists target girls and women who seem the most Vulnerable, not the most s**y.

Edit: Hey, can we have a disagreement Without ad hom attacks? I disagree with the asker and I think she is very mistaken, but she doesn't deserve to be insulted personally. A lot of women think as she does, unfortunately.

Edit: "Sigy.... so you're saying we should all do as we please and d**n the consequences? "

I'm saying straight out that I have a total right to dress socially in the way that I feel is appropriate. And I own my sexuality and it is a personal matter.

I'm not going to be scared off of doing what I want to, is my business, and have a total right to. It's that simple.

Edit: Actually, I think I made a bad choice of words before that doesn't look very respectful to the asker.

I mean to say that I disagree with the asker and think she is mistaken about rape and causality and I think it is a popular but mistaken belief that needs to be addressed.

I didn't and don't want to imply that she is stupid or anything bad for asking this question.

  14. victim 2 is more likely to get date raped cause she's sloshed and dressed to allure, but as a good ol drag em into an ally raping it's a random act of violence and I'd say there chances are equal

  15. Since so many rapes are by someone who knows the woman, whether or not the woman associates with strangers is irrelevant.

I understand what you're trying to say but I am sick and tired of people putting the burden of preventing rape on women. The burden should be more equal and placed on men to act responsibly and to not be ******* evil.

  16. This question IS offensive.  Don't you realize there are more kinds of women in the world besides "young and s**y" and "soccer mom" types?   75 year old GRANDMOTHERS get raped and molested.

Innocent KIDS get raped.  Stop trying to catagorize who is asking for it and who isn't.   it IS offensive.

We don't need these kinds of "seminars" from you or anyone here...

Added:  75% of the rapes?   75% of the rapes WHERE?

75% of the rapes in a specific city?

75% of the rapes in and around a drinking establishment?

or just 75% of the rapes in the entire country??

Prove those stats... give me a link.  I don't believe that for a second.

Still waiting for the link to these "stats".....

Let's put your Theory on the table shall we?   So starting midnight tonight, Every single female over the age of 10 shall dress in modest attire, wear little or no make-up, no heels higher than 1 inch, skirts are to be calf length or longer, no cleavage is allowed, no bare arms above the elbow, no gaudy jangly jewelry, and no elaborate hair colors or styles....

Now... NO one will ever get raped again!   Wow, who knew it was so simple??

  17. I agree that clothes matter. And I'm not blaming the victims of rape.

But even if she wore a poncho she could still be raped. If she went out and got drunk and enjoyed casual s*x, that's pretty much an invite for some stranger to get in her pants.

No. She doesn't deserve that. But she was asking for it.

  18. Again, " When you put yourself in situations with increased risk, you have to take increased precautions to mitigate those risks."

  19. s*x an war go together like a house without a door But the windows always open and the path is free to walk an i know that you'll be waiting if i ever come to talk..

  20. Yes, the streets are full of drunken children and elderly women.

  21. It won't be someone who enjoys taking a kick out of crime.

  22. No. 2 is at greater risk of being raped.  But she may consider the increased risk worth it if she is enjoying herself.

  23. You know exactly what answer you are going to get. Everyone is going to say number 2. This is somewhat pointless as you have already got a fully formed viewpoint.

  24. Of course woman #2 is more at risk and puts herself in more vulnerable and more dangerous situations than woman #1. She clearly enjoys the attention, so she better be prepared to handle both good and bad.

Both a beat-up Chevy truck and a shiny BMW convertible COULD get stolen. But if you're a car thief, which one are you going to go after? In a perfect world, people should be able to park their cars however they want with no negative consequences, but the reality is that one of these cars will attract much more attention (and I tend to believe that's kind of the point).

Neither woman deserved to be raped, nor asked for it. Neither car deserved to be stolen, nor did their owners ask for it.

But woman #1 is doing much more to take responsibility for her own safety than woman #2 is doing.
