  1. They all require judging to some extent...even swimming (where they have those automated touch pads) judges are required to ensure that all the rules have been followed.  Athletics also (especially when it is a close finish, the judges look over the photos and determine who finished first).  Even team sports have refs.  I supposed the most obvious ones are like you said though artistic gymnastics, rythmic gymnastics, diving, synchronised diving and synchronised swimming.

  2. It depends on what you mean by judging.  Gymnastics and diving require the most judging as those are the only ones where scores are actually subjective.  Judo and wrestling could be considered "judged" but it's quite obvious what's going on to everyone during the match such that the referee is mainly used to control the event.  A 5-point fall in wrestling and an ippon in judo are quite obvious such that when it happens, both athletes and their coaches know it happens.  To me, they are as much of a judged sport as fencing.

Weightlifting is also not really judged, as most of the time, it is quite obvious whether or not a lift was made.  Almost all of the time, all three judges will either signal a lift was good or bad the same.  I have never seen two red marks and one white mark or two white marks and one red mark.

If anything, boxing is really the only judged sport other than gymnastics and diving, as it is quite perplexing when each boxer gets points.

  3. Boxing or is that automated? Judo. Weight-lifting. My hubby remarked the other night that Britain does very well in sports that require no human judging eg cycling, sailing, rowing. We both think that there's quite a lot of political marking going on in the likes of Gymnastics - rather like the Eurovision!
