i changed the oil in my 2000 blazer yesterday and i put in 5W-30 penzoil which is what my owners manual calls for and then i told my dad today what i used and he freaked out and said it would ruine my engine and i was like wtf dad? thats what the cap says! he says i should use 10W-30 and thats what i used last time and it made my engine knock when i first started it up.. so this time i used what is called for and the knock went away but dad says that after 1,000 miles the knock will be back and worse because the oil is thicker or something i think he is nuts... what do i do?

  1. ignore him.

you used the right oil.  my dad has the same motor, in his last two vehicles actually, and anytime he used 10-30, which is listed as a secondary oil, he had knocks.  when he used the 5-30 it went away.

as an aside, pennzoil is terrible and can make any motor knock. try castrol gtx or mobile.

  2. very little differants between them.... ive used every brand ive used every weight and you can not tell the differants unless its cols and you using thick oil.... been driving over 35 yrs and working on cars about as long.... drag racing  dirt tracking off roading really abusing what i had and ive never seen any differant any any oil brand or weight... but using what the company says to is smarter it was tested to run on that weight

  3. well you can use any oil the onl thing iz dat if you switch to synthetic i would recommend you do synthetic blend first and then do full synthetic, the 10w-30 or 5w-30 it just means the thickness you use 10w 30 for thw winter the most and 5w 30 for sumer.

  4. the only difference between the 2 are when you first sart your car, the 5 will get to the running parts faster then the 10, but after it gets warmed up, they both have the same weight, 30 weight.

  5. follow the directions in your owners manual  also if you need an online repair manual go to autozone.com
