    Cleavage: determined by the arrangement of atoms of a mineral and the strength of the chemical bonds holding them together. A mineral that exhibits cleavage consistently breaks, or cleaves, along parallel flat surfaces called cleavage planes. Cleavage planes reflect more light and appear shinier than other breakage surfaces. Cleavage can be in one, two, three, four, or six directions. But NO mineral has five directions of cleavages.
