  1. It all depends on the quality of the receiver or preamp or amplifiers.

    Basically a receiver is a prepro and amplifier combined into one unit. Some of the high end receivers from Denon, Onkyo, Marantz, Yamaha, Pioneer or Sony are pretty good.

    Typically when you get into preprocessors and multichannel amplifiers you are getting fairly good quality. Dedicated amplifiers tend to do a nicer job at amplification than receivers but the difference is hardly audible. Prepros may or may not be any better than the processing that you can get from a receiver.

    Receivers are the hot commodity in Home Theater and most newer models have all the bells and whistles. Many prepros lack the HDMI connectivity. If you do find one with HDMI connectivity then you will be paying a premium.

    Dollar for dollar though I think AVRs vs Prepro/Amps are pretty close up to the $2000-$2500 price point. If you are looking over that amount then prepros and amps become a viable option.
