  1. Students who live in tend to spend a lot more time socializing, a lot less time cooking and cleaning.

Proximity to study halls and libraries allows for better use of time, but many students use less time studying in residence. First year students appear to do better in residence if they control their socializing adequately. (I include pub trips among socializing.)

Off campus, pub trips can also become a problem.

  2. If you rent the flat in the college then you are smack dab in the middle of, well, the college community.  This makes it easy to meet new people who are also going to college but the higher rent sucks.  If you rent something farther away, how are you going to get to school?  If you are going to drive then you need to think about the costs of petrol as well as parking and that well bring your weekly costs up.  Does ther rent in either place include costs such as power, water, gas, trash, etc. Sit down with pen and paper and examine your total monetary costs for each option and don't forget the intangibles of living in either place. Luck.

  3. Usually the college it liable for anything that may happen. If you rent outside the college you are liable from the moment you sign the lease until the end.

  4. Rent the house!

  5. residential college is so much fun and you will make so many friends. You also don;t have to pay for anything other than phone calls as all meals are provided.

Rent alone is cheaper but then you have to pay for phone, power, Internet etc and it comes out to about the same. If it is your first time living in Sydney it will also help you settle in faster because there are a whole lot of other people living with you who have either done the same thing or are doing it.

  6. inside the college if you want to meet new people outside if you don't (usually for 1st year it's a good idea to be inside)

  7. Depending on the rate of rent, it might be better to find an apt close to college than rent a flat at a higher rate.

  8. If you have roommates you can probably beat the price the college charges for room and board.  If you don't know anyone there yet, I would start out in the dorm make some friends and then find some place the following year.
