Friction coefficient depends mainly on the types of surfaces involved.

V-belt will produce more traction (frictional force) if every thing else is same because horizontal component of the normal force on two surfaces of V will balance out each other so resultant magnitude of normal force will be greater than the flat belt and so will be the frictional force. The more acute the angle of V the greater the frictional force.
