  1. It depends on what you mean by rare.

If you go by number of coins minted, dollar coins are a lot less rare than 50 cent pieces, at least in recent years.  With the start of the presidential dollar program, dollar coins are much much more common than 50 cent pieces.

Here are the figures from the US Mint:

                       Number of coins minted

                      Dollars          /      50 cent pieces

    2007         943 million    /    8 million

    2006         7.7 million     /    4.4 million

If you want a more legitimate answer to a more legitimate question, you have to be specific.

Coin collecting, which I presume is what you are getting at, is like eating a favorite pie, it depends on what is available and on who likes it.  That is if you are talking about value.

It just might be that you run into an ignorant coin collector who just has to have a more popular coin and will pay double the market value to get one right away for a collection show, and I am not kidding!  That is what marketing is all about, finding someone willing to pay your price, even if it is not worth it!  Did you read about the guy who purchased a video game system for $400 on E-bay when it was selling for $99 elsewhere on E-bay?????  IT IS TRUE !!!!

Well, the same applies to the value of coins.  But do not go expecting to sell a 1995 Lincoln cent for $60 unless you know that there is one particular 1995 Lincoln cent that sells for that value!  And there are buyers who will pay $60 for a particular 1995 Lincoln cent, I did not make that up!
