So I am attempting to set up my wireless router and all that jazz and the stupidest thing is holding me up. I have two spots on my laptop that the ethernet cable can go into, but which is it?? One has a symbol that looks like a phone jack and the other is 3 boxes attached by lines (meaning networking?) Please Help.

  1. it looks like the end of the phone line but it just wider

  2. The ethernet cable will not fit into the modem socket so the simple way is to see which one fits but you were right to assume attached boxes means network.

  3. Maybe you should try plugging it in... It wont fit into both...

The one with the telephone is dial up

The one with the "3 boxes" is ethernet. It will not fit into both.

  4. The Ethernet is the bigger one, probably the second one you indicated.

  5. Ethernet Port is usually indicated with a blue connection. The ethernet cable that goes into the port is usually blue to.

    I hope this helps you.

  6. It is the one with the three boxes connected, which stands for Local Area Network. This port is where you plug your Ethernet RJ45 cable into.

    Good luck :)

  7. Make sure you have an ethernet cord for one, if you look really close you can see 8 different wires if its just a phone cord there is 4, the phone cord has a smaller end and will "fit" in both, but if you have an ethernet cable and plug it into the router and the "potential" ethernet jack you will see lights light up on both the computer (if its on) and the router if you have the right jack
