  3. Prepositions are a pain. This is not as silly a question as it may seem to some.

Generally speaking, ON means "touching the surface" and IN means "beneath the surface." I've heard one or two teachers tell their students, "Think 'on top of' or 'inside of.'"

So based on those definitions, your choice should be IN. Selena Gomez is "inside of" Wizards of Waverly Place, right?

But, upon further review, we look at what someone wrote on (or should it be in) Wikipedia about Selena Gomez. "She currently stars as Alex Russo ON the Disney Channel Original Series, Wizards of Waverly Place."

That's not wrong, is it?  When we're talking about TV shows, we do routinely say, "She stars ON the program." Right?

I don't know why it is that we say "ON" when we're talking about TV shows but "IN" when we're discussing movies or plays. But we do. That's just one of the weird, unpredictable things about how English has developed over the years. (It's always developing, you know.)

I say use "IN."  But you're also not wrong to use "ON."

If anyone tries to give you a hard time about using "ON," just remind him that "The People" have spoken, and English has changed since he started studying it. Then just tell him to get a life. Stressing over prepositions is not good for one's blood pressure.

  4. IN
