  1. If you stick with Nikon or Canon you really cannot go wrong.  I am a Canon shooter, that is my preference, there are others out there that will swear by their Nikon systems.  In the end it has to be what is most comfortable and works best for you.

Remember with a dSLR you are not just buying a camera, but buying into their systems, because once you made an investment into their glass (lenses), it will be financially much more difficult to switch brands later.  Bodies will change, but your investment in glass will stay with you for a long time.

  2. You can never go wrong with Canon! Here's some sites that have expert reviews:http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/cl/29/Digit...

This one camera has 25 reviews alone!

    Hope it helps!

  3. I brought a Canon EOS40D recently and have been really pleased with it. good value to with the 17-85 lens kit and a whole host of lenses available.  But a friend brought a Nikon 200 and is equally happy... I think you need to see which one feels right for you.

  4. in my own opinion, canon and nikon are pioneered and have a good reputation in DSLR..so both of them are good.

  5. You're only going to get huge range of opinions.  I suggest you go to a reputable camera shop in your area and play with a few models to see how each fits your hands, and what features they offer.

I've provided a link to a side-by-side review of three entry-level models.  Keep in mind though, all the points made are moot if the camera doesn't feel good in your hands.

Another good source of reviews is the Amazon.com comments/reviews page for each model.

I did a tremendous amount of research, and several hands-on trials.  I settled on the Canon Digital Rebel XTI with a 50 mm prime Canon lens (I skipped on the kit lens, as it as optical garbage and many people suggested the 50 mm as an equally priced, optically better alternative).  I've enjoyed it since Dec. '07, and I'm very happy with my choice, with no complaints.
