I am planning to go to Rome, but I would like to use a train to visit France. I would like to find the cheapest train pass to use 3 or 4 days for two countries. I am going with 3 more adults. Thank you.

  1. It's often cheaper to buy single tickets for train travel than passes here. Even with the passes, you will need to pay additional supplements for the faster trains (here in Italy, the Alta Velocita - 20 euro, Eurostar - 15 euro, and Intercity trains - 5 euro) and the night trains. There's a page on the Eurail site that lists the supplements for various train types. You should check the train websites for prices for the trips you might want to make and compare to the price of the pass plus all supplements before deciding on a pass. You can use the passes on the slower regional trains without an extra supplement. A 4 day Italy-France  pass will cost you 197 euro per person for a Saver pass.

You can check schedules and prices on the Italian train website: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html. Look for the Amica fare available on trains within Italy. You need to buy the tickets 1 to 60 days in advance of your trip (20% discount over the standard fare). On the international trains, look for the Smart fare. The discounted rates on trains sell out pretty fast.

If you really want a pass, it depends on where you live. If you've been a resident of a European country for the past six months, you can get an interrail pass; otherwise, you get the Eurail pass. A Eurorail pass is the same thing as a Eurail pass.
