which one is correct and why? and what are these types of phrases are called?

world's population or world population.

They mean the same and are both correct. It depends with your preference, really. But then again, the trend most people follow nowadays is "world population". You might want to follow that, too.

Regarding the answer above mine: Actually, you can use "world population" in that sentence. It would still be considered grammatically correct. And actually, "world population" is more used nowadays.

It depends on the sentence they are being used in.

For e.g The whole world's population. Here "world population" cant be used.
