I am looking at a 1997 or newer V6 Camaro, or a VW Golf that is early/mid 90's or newer. Manual, or automatic, doesn't matter. I know my 97 Camaro I used to have got decent mileage, but would like to hear people's opinion. Oh yeah, my first choice would be a diesel golf, but I can't find any in my price range so don't count those either. Thanks

  1. I would prefer Golf.

All V6 are also expensive in insurance.

You can easily check quotes in internet, for example here: http://autoinsurance.noneto.com

  2. even an OLD diesel golf is a good deal, since the motor lasts 500,000 plus, a 10 year old one would last you a long long time!

    found you one in NY

  3. V6 = gas drinker.

  4. I agree with Jeff. Give him the best answer b/c he went through alot of trouble to give the most info. Consider this slao, a Camaro V6 does get good mpg's b/c it's low and aerodynamic enough. The Golf isn't. It's just small. The 3.8L V6 in the Chevy is basically a Buick block that's been around for years and is still the same one they use in the Lacrosse & Lucerne. G'luck!

  5. Who cares, you'll have more fun with the Camaro.

  6. it's the looks , go with the camaro!!!...lol..  v-6 decent mileage!!!

  7. old VW's are fairly unreliable or at least need more TLC than most cars.

Chevy doesn't have the best repair records but in this case, they might be the lesser of two evils.

don't pay a lot for any car older than 1998.

you can buy any of these for around $4,000.

98 Acura CL, 98 Ford Mustang V6, 98 Honda Accord or Civic, 98 Nissan Frontier or Pathfinder, 98 Subaru Impreza or Legacy, 98 -00 Toyota Corolla or Echo 00

  8. V4 > v6

  9. Assuming both cars are in the same condition, I would personally go with the Camaro, it looks nicer and has 5 star crash test rating, golf.. only 3.  As for the mpg rating, golf does a little better, but thats expected because its lighter but.. more unsafe.

    These are government test ratings:

    Chevrolet Camaro 6 cyl, 3.8 L,  (1997)

    Manual 5-spd,

    17-city, 28-hwy

    Automatic 4-spd

    17-city, 26-hwy

    Volkswagen Golf/GTI 4 cyl, 1.8 L, (1990)

    Manual 5-spd

    22-city, 29-hwy

    Automatic 3-spd

    21-city, 26-hwy

    Volkswagen Golf/GTI 4 cyl, 2.0 L, (1998)

    Manual 5-spd

    21-city, 28-hwy

    Automatic 4-spd

    19-city, 26-hwy

    Hope this helped!

  10. obviously the vw will have better gas mileage, why would you want a v6 camaro anyway? theyre slow and heavy, only camaro's worth buying are z28 or ss
