Which one should i buy, 55-200 0r 70-300mm

i have the 18-200 and it is amazing!!! i strongly recommend it!

here is the trouble with the lenses you are asking about:

the 55-200.

it doesnt allow a very wide angle of view.. if you are a few feet away from someone and want to catch their whole body, you wont be able to. youll have to step back quite a bit.

the 70-300 has the same problem, only worst. and the fact of the matter is, that you almost never zoom past 200mm, unless you shoot wildlife or something.

the 18-200 is perfectly versatile, and its basically the only lense you need! great wide angle and great zoom!

its a bit pricier than the other lenses, but its well worth every penny.

and it would be better to put off buying the lense for now so you can save up for it, then to buy one of those lenses and regret it later down the road... thats just my point of view though...

whichever one you choose i hope you enjoy it though!!!

tip: go to best buy or something and take a look at the D300 or D200... those usually have the 18-200 lenses on them. you should take a look

This is a tough question to answer with the information you gave us. What are you shooting? For general shooting, the 55-200 will be perfectly fine. For sports or nature shooting, I'd say the 70-300 (even though it's not super fast).

I have the 18-200 myself, and while it's amazing, I find that I could use some extra reach on occasions (like the 70-300 or the 80-400.) That's just the way I shoot though.

The 18-200m lens is the most popular, though it may cost as much as the camera...

Both are pretty soft at the telephoto end.  If you don't have a particular need for the extra length, the 55-200 is probably more useful through the whole zoom range.
