I've heard that for every inch of fish in your tank, you add 1 gallon. but than i heard a starting fish you add 20 gallons, and 10 gallons for every added fish. Which one is correct, or is there one i dont know about.

  1. It depends on the type of fish you get, like neon tetras.....you would not need a 40 gallon tank for 3, but you would need a 40 gallon tank for 3 goldfish it depends on the species. Just research the species b4 getting the fish. Like 1 oscar needs at least 55 gallons, but 2 needs at least 100 gallon, cuz they get big. Teras, you can have 10 in a 10 gallon tank, they get about 2 inches. The one inch per gallon rule is only to help beginners NOT OVER stock their tanks, once you are more expexperiencedu can throw that rule the trash!

  2. The emergency rule is one INCH of fish per gallon, but then you also need to research the specific type of fish you have or are buying, because some need a lot of space.  There is no one decisive rule.

  3. for every inch add a gallon.

  4. i would go by about 3 gallons per fish. really depends on what kind of fish you want.  i have a 50 gallon but i only have about 10 fish in there and don't plan on getting any more.
