  1. A baitcasting reel can cast a bit further than a spinning reel, once you have had a *lot* of practice with it. An expert can precisely control the momentum of the spool so that it actually pushes the line out during casting, whereas the spool on a spinning reel is stationary and it always puts some friction against the line. It also allows you to control the distance of your cast better, as you can simply stop the spool with your thumb to drop your rig where you want it to go and not overshoot your target. A baitcasting reel's gearing also has more leverage and is easier to crank when you're retrieving tackle through waters loaded with weeds and other debris, and handles heavy line better (which is what's recommended to get snagged tackle out of the weedy areas that bass like to inhabit).

  2. Baitcasters take a lot of practice to master and spinning rods can cast as just as far. It is all in how you set up your rod and reel. If you don't know anyone who goes fishing, take your rod and reel to a tackle shop and see if it is a matched combination. It is important to use the correct weight line and the amount of line spooled onto your reel for maximum casting distance. It is also important to know how much lure weight the rod can cast. Make sure you have the basics covered and practice casting. If you still can't reach the bass move to another section of the lake where you can and you'll be catching fish in no time. Hey good luck and tight lines!

  3. The as you call it open bail spinning reel will out cast in distance a bait casting reel. I use myself a spining reel in open water where there is not the need for being accurate in my cast. A bait cast reel will give you more control of your cast. Also a bait casting reel does require a rod design to fit reel properly. Try for your first outfit a combo package. If you already have the reel just ask the person working in the sporting goods section to help you with the rod. Note the rod will tell you written on side of it the line size and lure weight it is design for. So determine the size lures you plan to use by their weight and size line you plan to use when buying the rod. This applies to any rod or reel.

  4. yes u need a special rod for a baitcasting reel. A good baitcasting reel with run about 100 bucks. Just make sure if u buy one, that u have ur thumb on the spool. If you dont the line will become a tangled mess.
