  1.      In my opinion, I think that a veterinarian is better because you get to help sick animals. Every animal needs good care. There are animals getting hurt everyday. By rude animal owners, other animals, and lots more. By being a veterinarian, you can actually save a lot of lives. You can also cure animals.

But of course at the end, it's really your choice which one you want. You should always follow your own opinion.

  2. WELL it all depends on what you would like to have as your job for the rest of your life and then you need to look at salaries and then what your schedules would be like. If it were me i would lean more towards the vet side... but then again it is your choice in the end.

  3. i think a vet

  4. I like the social worker idea better. It's just because I don't like to see animals in pain.

  5. i think a vet would be more fun.

  6. Social Worker if you like dealing with people. A vet if you like dealing with animals.

  7. social worker....i hate looking at dying or sick pets....how sad

  8. You really need to think this one out for yourself, and that may be hard to do.

What kinds of things do you like to do, and how do they match what either a social worker or a veterinarian has to do?

Also, how much do you like science vs. humanities?

I think you'll find that a social worker is going to deal with people, often people who are poor or disabled or caught up in some bad life situations.  The social worker will have to have an educational background in a lot of people-oriented courses of study -- sociology, psychology, for example -- and may take some physical sciences as a part of that, but is going to study human behavior much more than medicine.

The veterinarian on the other hand is going to be working mostly with animals, in many cases but not all cases with sick animals.  The vet is going to need to come prepared with a lot of medical knowledge and will probably need to have taken many classes in biology, some in chemistry, maybe even a few in physics.

Will the vet need to go to school for longer than the social worker will?

I think so - but you should get yourself a good guidance counselor and find out for sure.

What kinds of hours will the social worker put in, and for whom?

What kinds of hours will the vet put in, and under whose supervision?

Once you know the answers to those questions, you may have a better sense of which job you want to do.

Another possible clue:  have you spent any time interning in a social work agency or a vet's office?  Do you know anybody in either job, and have you been able to see what the work looks like, up close?

These are pieces of information that may help you to decide, I think.

I have a friend who's a social worker, and I'm sure she believes in the work and cares for the people that are her clients; on the other hand, she finds it a pretty hard job with long hours.

My sense is that for many people, being a vet would be a better job -- but not for my friend Vickie, for several different reasons.

But Vickie is not you, of course, and you need to find out what would feel right for yourself.

  9. You can not imagine how hard it is to get into vet school

as in, more people apply and don't get into vet schools than medical schools.

It is OK that you don't know what you want to be yet. Take a variety of courses, so you get exposed to lots of options.   Go to the job counseling center early, to start reading about the different types of jobs.

there is a test called the

Strong Vocational Interest Blank, now most commonly referred to as the Self Directed Search or SDS.

    SEE http://luna.cas.usf.edu/~mbrannic/files/...

    for an overview.

When you get to college, go to the job.career counseling office to take this test - even if you have to pay for it.   It helps ID the things you are interested in.

I have to point out that the 2 choices you presented us with ( social worker or vet) are both helping professions. which might tell you something about what you are looking for.

  10. both are great career fields what does your passion call for?  money is not the most important thing, which would you feel happier with, which will give you the fulfillment you need?

    Helping families and people?

    or

    Helping animals?

I agree with Tonick, you need to have patience and be very understanding to so many different situations,  you have to be caring but not take the job home at the end of the day

  11. Whichever one u like better. Whichever is more fun. Whichever one pays better.

  12. To be a vet is really cool, if you like it go ahead, but to be a social worker u need to be very patient with people and worry about their problems.

    bye!

  13. If you can deal with putting animals to sleep, I say vet. It always fascinated me that they not only know how to save one type of animal, but many.

  14. It might be helpful to take an animal science and a sociology course this first year if college.  This way you can have a better feel for what interests you most since you will have this position the rest of your life.

Most colleges also have an "open option" program that helps new college students explore their options and choose one that fits best.  This includes looking at how long school will last and what your salary range will be as well as how in demand the job is.
