well i have decided on the ammo that is very quiet and more powerful than some sonic ammo. the ammo is aguila sss sniper subsonic 22lr ammo(60 grains at 950 fps) and i was wondering which gun would this be quieter in a ruger 10/22 carbine 18 in. barrel or a mossberg model 341 w/ a 24 inch barrel?

  1. *24*.

  2. M,

Picking your ammo before you have a rifle is an exercise in futility.

All firearms are laws unto themselves when it comes to ammo compatibility, and no caliber is more persnickety about what ammo it will shoot well than a .22 LR.

Decide which rifle you want.  Buy it, and buy a box of as many different makes and bullet types as you can find.

Then take your rifle to the range and see which box of ammo produces the best groups.  (Run a couple of patches through the barrel between different loads.)  Then buy yourself a brick or three of that particular brand and type of ammo, getting the same lot number if possible.

Two things to consider, longer barrels are quieter, and longer barrels produce less velocity.  The optimum barrel length for best velocity with a .22 is between 18" and 20".  With a 24" barrel, you can loose as much as a couple of hundred feet per second.

    Good Luck and Good Shooting

  3. in theory, the longer barrel will be a bit quieter, but we are talking a 99.999% sameness
