Which plastics (PETE, Polypropylene, polycarbonate, etc) used to make plastic bottles is the safest to store drinking water? I recently read that plastics made of PVC rank amongst the worst offenders for leaching toxic cancer-causing substances into the food. It seems that we read about what's bad for you but no real alternatives are offered to protect the general public.

Thanks for your feedback. Please give me some specific references where I can read more about the relative safety of using plastic to store food.

  1. Actually, your bigger stores like Wal-Mart or d**k's Sporting Goods will have these really neat aluminum-lined water bottles that are way safer for you to drink out AND much more environmentally friendly since you wash them and reuse them instead of tossing them out.  Look into it.  I've got a 64 oz bottle I nip water from all day long...just pour some out into my glass.

  2. yup those plastic bottles you get are bad. its fine if you re use it twice or thrice after that but longer isn't good. the plastic quality is cheap and the chemicals used to make them slowly get into the water.

any bottle that has been made for water storage (you have to buy these standalone, they don't come with water or coke or whatever in it) will be fine.

those metal bottles they use for camping and certain plastic bottles are good. NALGENE.
