HI EVERYONE,

I WOULD LIKE TO TALK TO THE PARAKEET OWNERS. I AM THINKING OF GETTING A DERBYAN.

BUT WHICJ ONE MAKES THE BETTER PET??

ALEXANDRIES, DERBYAN, MOUSTAGE OR INDIAN RING NECK.

I HAV OTHER BIRDS AS WELL AND THEY WILL BE OUT DAILY AND HANDLE DAILY.

IF YOU OWN ONE OF THESE BIRDS LET ME KNOW.

ALSO HOW IS THE DERBYAN BIRD OVER ALL?

  1. The Alexandrine Parakeet is a gregarious and noisy species, forming huge flocks at evening roosts. Its flight is swift and direct, and the call is a loud scream, similar to but deeper than that of the Rose-ringed Parakeet.

Derbyan parakeets make excellent companions when only one is chosen, because they are naturally shy and prefer the company of other birds, if given a choice.  They are larger than most Parakeets at 20+ inches in length and are extremely intelligent.  They can be loud (what parrot isn’t at times), but; their ability to talk (almost like Amazons) and their affectionate ways will outshine that very quickly.

Mustache Parakeets in addition to the striking markings, have quite different personalities than members of the Indian or African Ringnecks.  Mustache Parakeets tend (from our observations any way) to be better kept as single bird pets.  While they will get along famously with dogs, cats or other household pets, they tend to get a little bossy where other birds are concerned.  They are generally mellower than a Ringneck, but also have a stubborn streak to them that will show up from time to time.  All in all a well socialized Mustache Parakeet will be a joy to be around.  They are comical and entertaining, and even downright snuggly at times.  The Mustache Parakeet has about the same speaking ability as a Ringneck Parakeet and they can be taught many different words and phrases.  They will also need to be heard at times.  Just like any other companion bird, Mustache Parakeets can be very vocal at times, and their higher pitched voices seem to carry very well.  These are not birds for people who like peaceful quiet surroundings.  Like other parrots they require companionship, and if you keep them singly you must be willing and able to spend great amounts of time with them.  The same is true if you want to maintain their tameness.  They should be handled regularly and be well socialized, if you wish them to stay tame.

Ringnecks are intelligent parrots and DO make great pets. They learn concepts quickly and love to show off.  Along with being intelligent, they are great at talking.  Quaker Parakeets are known for their talking ability; however, a Ringneck can speak with clarity that’s phenomenal. These birds are truly masters at talking for their size and can easily compete with Quakers, Grays, and Amazons.
