Hi. I'll be visiting Madrid In early September. Any suggestions as to which part is good to stay in?

I'm a photogrqpher, so I'd be interested in staying where the heritage sites and the touristy spots are.

Thanks

  1. Puerta del Sol, Gran Via, Plaza de España, Calle Mayor... Look for accomodation near these zones in Madrid and you'll be in the best situation to get to the main places of Madrid.

  2. Centro.  Always.  Anywhere in Europe, if you want the heritage sites, you need to be in the old part of the city, generally called the Centro in Spain.

I stayed right on the edge of the Plaza Mayor, but anyplace listed as near Sol or Gran Vía is good.  If you want clean, basic, and close to everything...Hostal Cruz Sol...nice place, nicer location!

  3. I was there in February 2008 and stayed at the Hostel Metropol on Gran Via and Calle de la Montera. The location was perfect, walking distance to Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, and a Metro station right out the front door.  I think anywhere around this area would be great for you.

  4. I agree with the other answers.

One thing, though - keep your bags, wallet and camera with your hand on top of them ALL THE TIME. Don't carry your rucksack on your back, as they are usually opened by thieves at road crossings!!!! Be aware of who is in front and behind you all the time.

Sounds crazy, but I've seen a lot of pickpocketing - not the Spaniards, mostly immigrants (who even dress like tourists with maps etc. to put people at ease)
