Which part of New Zealand should I go???

Question

I am heading to New Zealand during mid-August to holiday and work for 2 months.Which place should I go to have a work?because apple picking seasons seems to be over..

well its still quite cold then, so i'd work indoors. try queenstown or christchurch. if you want to work outside you could live in christchurch and maybe work at one of the vineyards in waipara (north canterbury, south island). i live on a farm in waipara. its forty minutes north of christchurch and lots of vineyard workers often car pool from christchurch. try muddy water. its a vineyard thats often looking for temporary workers. www.muddywater.co.nz

they've probably almost finished prunning now, but may be starting on bud rubbing. the recent floods there may have created more work too. waipara is a town only of a few hundred people, and christchurch is about 360,000

Queenstown is beautiful. its a touristy ski town in otago. its next to lake wakatipu and surrounded by huge mountains. it would be the perfect time of year for skiing as well. the population is only 10,000.

Wellington is nice but during august/september its raining alot and its the windest place in the country due to the cook strait (the channel of water between the north and south islands.

Auckland is the warmest place at that time of year, but its still cold. the south island is obviously the coldest place at this time of year, but the scenery is the best. the southern alps run up the middle of the island, and you'll only get snow in the south island, not the north.

i guess it depends on the sort of job you want

Go to Central Otago (queenstown/wanaka/cromwell region) as they have plenty of vineyards and vineyards need constant work and usually the majority of the workers there are foreigners, also in Queenstown and Wanaka at least I know of a couple job agencies which you can use to get work through, but it may work out cheaps to get directly in contact with the vineyards yourself as last Summer I did that and I got paid for travel time and holiday pay whilst the workers who went through agencies got no holiday pay (it was encorporated into their hourly pay rate) and didn't get paid for the 1.5hrs travel each day.

if you want to work in a crowded city, i suggest auckland but if you an amazing places(lots to do, great views, cold places) i advice south island. ^^ but have fun!!!!!!!!!

You are probably best to go to somewhere like Queenstown where there are likely to be plenty of tourist type jobs either in cafes and shops, or ski fields etc. It really depends what your skills are. And what visa you have. Otherwise I suggest a bigger city like Auckland where there will always be unskilled jobs in restaurants, cafes, etc.

The other options is to check out work on farms. There also may be pruning jobs on orchards - kiwifruit or vineyards.

But having a visa so you can do this work is really important.

I live in Marlborough which has the lowest unemployment rate in the country....in fact they have to bring in people from the pacific islands to do all the work on the grapes......Marlborough has lots of vineyards and need lots of people to work....pretty much all year round. I am not sure of websites to go to look for that...maybe Pernod...but just do a search for viticulture jobs in marlborough....BUT you also need to look on the immigration websites as well as you need the correct visas....

Well, first of all New Zea land is a fantastic place to go on holiday! It's such an amazing country.

There are so many places you could work.

I would start with Auckland. This is because it's the countries' largest city and therefore has the most job opportunities. You can get a job in one of the many cafes or restaurants in the city. Auckland is also called the city of sails and has a nice harbor with heaps of boats on it going in and out all day. It's a good city to go to in my opinion :). Here is the Auckland website.

Another option would be the Bay of Islands. It's located around 60km north of the city of Whangarei (north of Auckland). It's really nice up there with heaps of beaches and green rolling hills. There would be some restaurants up there and cafes where you could work.

If your into the beach and party scene, I would suggest Tauranga (suburb of Mount Manganui). It's full of people from all over the world having a good time! It's a friendly little place with heaps of tourists, cafes, restaurants, beaches, surf shops etc. The only down side of the place would be all the teenagers! haha. If your after a smaller town then perhaps try the sea side town of Whakatane. I have family living there and they say it's paradise! There are lots of beaches there and the town also isn't far from White Island (a volcanic Island out a bit in the sea).

OH YEAH! Taupo! This town is amazing! It's located right on a massive crystal clear lake and on the other side of the lake are snow capped mountains. The town has lots of tourism so you can maybe get a job somewhere in that industry. However this town does have a bit of a dodgy side too! Lots of drunken fights! Still, it's not as bad as where I live (Gold Coast, Australia, lol).

New Plymouth is another town on the Westurn side of the North Island. It's right near Mount Taranaki! It's a very scenic part of the country. It also has some nice beaches.

The last town in my head I can think of on the North Island is Wellington! This is the capital and I really enjoy going to it on holidays. It's kind of like a massive Harbour village. It's quite a cosy little city with lots of houses build up on hills surrowding a harbour. It has a great nightlife, lots of shops, and restaurants and is a very safe city! (I couldn't get over how I could walk around it at 12am, unlike Auckland or Christchurch haha).

Christchurch is apparently a very scenic city. It's like the England of 'down under'. It's quite  a large city so I would imagine it would have heaps of jobs. However, I hear that it's quite dangerous to go out in the city area at night.

Other towns you may wish to check out include, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Napier, Rotorua, Gisbourne, Whangerai, Paraparaumu, Hamner Springs, Invergargill and Takaka.

Ignore Pagrus. Most of the crime in NZ is gang related (so it's not random) or it happens to people walking home in the early hours of the morning. Crime is everywhere but nz has a low crime rate compared.
