  1. the outer skin

  2. Like all arthropods, cockroaches have a hard exoskeleton which covers and protects it. This is made of three layers. The outermost layer is the cuticle. Everything that is visible on the outside of a cockroach--the wings, skin, legs, hairs--is made of a single unbroken layer of cuticle. The cuticle layer contains no cells--it is dead and cannot grow. The cuticle layer is itself made up of two parts, the outer waterproof epicuticle, and the much thicker procuticle which lies underneath. Cuticle is made mostly from the protein chitin, which is a tough and flexible material, somewhat like plastic in its physical properties. The cuticle is made up of a number of very thin laminations of chitin, arranged so that the fibers in each lamination run perpendicular to those above and below it, forming a cross-hatched pattern that gives great structural strength while allowing for flexibility.

Beneath the cuticle layer is the epidermis, which is made up of a layer of living cells that secrete the chitin making up the outer cuticle. Beneath this is the basal membrane, which separates the epidermis from the internal body fluids and organs.

The interior of the exoskeleton contains a number of protuberances and projections which serve as attachment points for the muscles. These points are called "apodemes".

Unlike most insects, which have a waxy coating on their exoskeleton to prevent dehydration, roaches are covered in a thin layer of grease, which gives them their characteristic "dirty" feeling. In reality, cockroaches are scrupulously clean animals and expend a great deal of effort to keep their cuticle clean of foreign matter.

  3. It would be the outside

  4. a cockroach itself is exoskeleton.

  5. i have no pics but the outside is the exoskeleton

  6. Exoskeleton means outside skeleton. Duh.

You know when step on a cockroach and it makes a sound...it because the outside of its body has an "exoskeleton"

  7. The outside.

  8. I would say the outside.

  9. An exoskeleton means that the creature has an external skeleton.

A cockroach's skeleton is on the outside, so the whole outside of the bug is the exoskeleton.  Consequently, this is why a cockroach can survive a nuclear blast.

    Good luck

  10. Like all Arthropods (insects, spiders, crabs, scorpions, ticks, etc) the entire outside is the exoskeleton.  This is more like a hard shell, designed to protect the internal organs.  The only minor exception to this is in spiders, because the abdomen is softer and more fragile than the rest of the body.

Therefore, the entire outer surface of the Cockroach is it's exoskeleton.  Even the wings are covered in a thin shell-like skin to protect the veins, etc.

  11. all u see on the cockroach

  12. Duh, the word 'exo' gives it away somewhat...on the OUT...SIDE....
