Question:

Which parts of India are best to visit in July?

We are planning to visit India this summer for 3-4 weeks. Due to other constraints, we can only go in July/August. (We can't leave until July 1, and have to be back by mid-August.)

Given that it is the monsoon season, which regions of India would be best to visit? We are hoping to both see cultural sites, get a chance to see something of what the country is like (and hope people live there), as well as do some outdoor activities (hiking, etc.).

There will of course be some rain, but 18 hours of rain per day, 7 days a week, will probably not be much fun! We would prefer an area in which it pours hard for 2 hours, and then is clear the rest of the day! High temperatures (and lots of humidity) are less of a worry...

From preliminary reading, it seems as if the southern part is best, getting lower levels of rainfall than, say, Delhi or Mumbai. For example, places like Kerala and Pondicherry?? Or Karnataka? Any advice is welcome.

Thanks.

  1. I think Shimla, Punjab and Kerala would be nice places to visit. Actually Dehradun, Haridwar and Rishikesh would be the best places to visit during the time you mentioned. There's so much in India to see but these are places is a must especially the breath taking sceneries of Rishikesh.
