  1. If an old man such as myself can live in Haiti and walk around without fear, I am sure a young woman can survive DR with no problems.  Just use common sense.  Sometimes what the media reports about a country is not 100% true.  They have their own agenda to bring down a country.  It is politics.  They say that to avoid Haiti because it is extremely violent because the majority of the population is black.  So what if the majority of the population is black and practices voodoo!  Does that mean that every black person is a criminal and practices voodoo?  Many Dominicans do not like Haitians because they are darker than them and poorer.  Does it mean that all Dominicans are racists?  Does it mean that every Haitian is black and poor?  There are many good and spiritual people that are no longer fonctioning on an animalistic level.  They are spiritual and do not see color or status.   In my opinion Santo Domingo is no more dangerous than your average big city like New York, Miami, LA or Chicago.  Would you walk around in New York at 2 a.m.  in an unfamilar neighborhood?  Would you walk around flashing your "blings, blings"?  Would you walk around half naked showing off your buttocks? If you are going to Santo Domingo alone, please stay at a reputable hotel such as the Renaissance Jaragua Hotel and Casino.  You can also check out Hotel Hamaca & Resort in Boca Chica.  There are also numerous decent resorts in Juan Dolio.  Boca Chica and Juan Dolio have beaches and are close to Santo Domingo.  The hotels will have guided tours if you ask for one.  Have fun and stay safe :-) !  If you are curious about Haiti.

  2. I believe you will have to use your instinct as any good female would. You are aware what looks an ok atmosphere and not; but here are some parts of the city that I would not recommend for you to go and most like you will never see any ways but you asked:

Los Mina, Los Alcarrizos, Mata Hambre, La Cienega, Guachupita, Gualey, Guaricano, Villa Mella., Los Guandules

Try to stay within the center of the city or tourists/historical areas where regular buildings and houses are. I’m sure you will be fine if you follow normal tourist guides like never trust a stranger.
