Which pet should I choose!?

Well my mom said that me and my sister can have a pet for a back-to-school present because we both been DIEING to have another for the LONGEST time. We have other pets and they are treated as ANGELS.....so I`ve been doing A LOT of research and my sister wants a hamster(so if you can give me any info on that, it would be great) but I dont know what kind of pet I want....

I will do TONS of research before I get it of coarse but first I need to think of what pet would be PERFECT for me......

I want something that is......

-small(so NO dog, cat, ect)

-fun

-playful

My mom said NO......

-snakes

-rats

-ferrets(she sais they smell)

So if you guyz can give me any info on the pet you think that would be BEST for me, would be FABULOUS!

THANX,

-Amanda

  1. well i would try a chinchilla they do not sink and can be very playful.

  2. Hi,

I would recommend maybe a pair of degus as i have 2 that i recently got they are great fun to watch, i hear they become very tame  (mine are new so we are still working on that one) , they are extremely intelligent and they live long like 5-8 yrs!  They are inside pets and look like this http://degoe.tripod.com/engels/e_info.ht...  the inicial cost varies depending on the cage as that is the most pricey thing my cage cost me £80 but there are much cheaper ones but i was too excited to wait for a delivery so i just bought this one. Overall everything to do with my degus cost me about £200 but it neednt be that much.

They are classed as an exotic pet so u will have to find a vet that deals with them.

    http://myhomezone.co.uk/degus/

    http://www.degutopia.co.uk/

the above are the most informative websites i found but here are some more i used as i couldnt find a book on them.

They are inexpensive to keep and are really cute and make cute noises they dont smell (well mine dont i clean them out 1nc a week)

    Hope this helps.x

  3. Hiya,

Hamsters - especially syrian hamsters are lovely pets and do not bite if you treat them kindly.

Rats are fantastic pets if you want something that is small and fun, however they do need quite a lot of space in their cage. They can be trained to a small degree e.g. not to p**p when out of their cage, to come to you when you call them - even to fetch small items!

  4. a hedgehog

  5. i would say rats but your not allowed them o the next best thing is a hamster.  dont get a dwarve hamster though coz they die quickly and my friends neerly boroke its leg on the age ramp coz it was too small. so i would recomend a syrian hamster they are awsome!!

  6. Guinea pigs make wonderful companions. These docile members of the rodent family rarely bite and are known for squeaking with delight when their favorite humans enter the room. Guinea pigs are excellent starter pets for older children who have mastered proper handling techniques. This would be a good choice. I like rabbits too but they are high maintenance and much more expensive overall.

  7. i would recommend a dwarf hamster or a little mousy. i like dwarf hamsters better. they are both friendly, cute, active. my dwarf hamster rarely bites. i have a chinese dwarf hamster. here are some links to supplies i recommend and have:

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js... this is chinchilla sand. it is good for bathing. dont get a small pet like a mouse or hamster wet!

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js... this is the cage i have and my stepsister has it to. it is a good cage. dont get the crittertrail Z because the wheel always gets stuck.

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js... a good toy for a mouse or hamster are these run about balls. you can let them go free in them without worrying about loosing them.

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js... this is the mouse food you should buy. it is a good brand for food. it has all different kinds. some for hamsters and guinea pigs, gerbils, bunnies.

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js... here is the hamster food

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js... this is bedding. i recommend it for mice and hamsters so they can hide in it.

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js... you should get a little hut like this. those little shapes that it shows on the side are things you put on it so they can chew on them. my hamster loves it.

it does not matter what gender you get. but at petsmart they only sell males. dontt ever buy a dwarf hamster and one year later put another in with him. they need to be bought from the same litter. always have a wheel for your dwarf hamster/mouse. dwarf hamsters love sunflower seeds, so dont run out!

sorry some include rabbit, they were also rabbit names.

    good luck!

  8. well hamster's bite and so do mice rats dont bite rats are the best to get the are fun and playfull try to convence your mom to let u get a rat if you whant one

  9. Gerbils are the BEST pet! I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THEM!

    http://www.twinsqueaks.com/guide.php

  10. theres always bunnies...

  11. Well, hamsters can be playful, but they sleep all day and are up all night.  Gerbils are very friendly and love the attention.  Guniea pigs are cool because you can teach them alot of cool tricks.  Rabbits are just like guniea pigs. Have fun with your new pet.

  12. Well, as a mom I first said no to rats, but my kids convinced me to do some research.  I found that rats are really smart and friendly and they do not stink.  You can teach them tricks, they can learn their names and they are very clean animals.  However, if you don't clean the cage it will start to smell.

See if your mom will do some research on them.

Hamsters also will smell if you don't change their bedding and they are not as friendly and affectionate toward people.

Guinnea pigs are cute, but not social animals.

If you want small, fun, playful, smart, clean, friendly do some rat research.  You will need at least two.

  13. well honestly i would get if you already have a guinea pig then a chinchilla you just need stuff they could jump on because they are very play they are like getting a ferret mixed with guinea pig mixed with squirel mixed with gerbil.

  14. Maybe you should get a second guinea pig?

after all, they are SOO much more fun because they speak and play with eachother!

The thing about hamsters is that thry sleep all day and bite. :/

  15. well honestly,

the only interactive pets there truly are...are dogs and cats!

I had guinea pigs (before my dog) and they sat in their cage

If you want sometime cute and fluffy!

maybe a dwarf hamster...they're really cute

  16. I would suggest a pair of mice.

Hamsters can be lovely, although seem more likely to bite than other rodents. They are also nocturnal so you may not see much of them!

Chinchillas are anything BUT boring! But only if they actually have enough space and toys etc. It really pains me to see so many chins stuck in tiny cages unable to do anything. At college we had chins housed in huge avaries (bigger than my room!) with loads of tunnels, shelves, branches, nestboxes, dustbaths etc.

But - unless you have plenty of space and money I wouldn't go for chins. They also don't like to be handled.

Mice are my absolute favourite small pet. They don't mind being held and rarely ever bite. But the most fun is watching them in their cage. They will play together, sleep together, groom eachother etc.... (As a social species it is important you get at least two of the same s*x). They are realy active and interesting. I had a group of nine females all with very different personalities. One just loved to eat and did little else so ended up significantly porkier than the others. Then one spent all its time on the running wheel. One we nicknamed Houdini because it spent ages climbing round the cage, testing all the bars - although it only got out once. And finally we had "tidy-up-mouse". She used to spend all her time making the bed and clearing up after the other mice.

If you want mice to be interesting you do need to give them plenty of space and stuff to do. A great idea is to not use a food bowl - scatter feed them instead. Mix their food into the bedding, hide it in toys etc. This way they have to forage for it. You can put little bits of nesting material all over the cage or give them sheets of kitchen towel so they have to collect it all and make their own nests. Running wheels, cardboard boxes and tubes, store bought toys are all gerat for keeping mice entertained.
