  1. Guitar picks are really inexpensive, you can buy an entire handful of them for only a couple of dollars.

Go to your local music store and buy a dozen or so different picks in different materials, different sizes, different thicknesses, and try them all out and see which one(s) you like best.  They're all good, and they'll all work for steel-string acoustic guitar, its just a question of personal taste.

FWIW, almost all guitar picks are made out of plastic nowadays -- Tortex, celluloid, etc are just different types of plastic, and I have no idea what the differences are :-)

Personally I like Dunlop Tortex picks, either the blue ones (1.00 mm gauge) or even the purple ones (even thicker).  These days I mostly just strum rhythm on my acoustic and I like a good heavy pick to to do that with so that I can really dig in :-)

  2. No material is "best" for acoustic guitar. You just have to find out what you like. Some picks will last longer than other, but they all perform the same function -- to  sound the string. They also produce different tones, so you must really experiment with many different picks to get what you like. Over many, many years as a guitarist, I have changed "favorite" picks many times. Now, I don't use picks at all.

  3. I liked Tortex myself. It's been years since I've even used a pick (fingers), but we used to call those "turtle picks"

  4. I use "COOL" picks because they come in a variety of strengths and I like the rough surface that makes them easy to hold when I'm sweating.. .but I haven't a CLUE what they are made from... I just assumed they were plastic
