Next year for a Christmas gift to my parents I plan on sending them on a trip to Italy. But I am not sure where to send them to. They are in their early 40s, I want them to have the ultimate Italy experience and see amazing things and meet amazing people. I am looking for a place where the locals do speak English often, since my parents do not know Italian. Also what is the "off-season" in Italy, where flights and hotels are cheapest?

  1. i want to suggest the historic center of Siena has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. Siena prospered under the new arrangements, becoming a major centre of money lending and an important player in the wool trade.

Really Siena is very beautiful city and mixture of historic culture and latest architecture. Varied tourists come across the world with different purposes. Some come for relaxation, some for fun & enjoyments and some come for business purpose.

Off season: might be gap of may or June

  2. venice is nice but expensive.Florence Rome is too expensive but if u send them to florence they can go to rome for a day by train.

  3. You have to go Florence. Its is my favorite place in Italy. The scenary is spectacular. Go to the Uffizi museum, amazing artworks including the Birth of Venue, when you go to the top floor they have a huge terrace overlooking the city. Venice was great, lots of little shops to buy souveniors, you can see a demonstration of how they do the glass blowing, and take a gandala ride. Rome, you have to go Vatican and Sistine Chapel, go to the Colleseum, Spanish Steps, the Patheon.  Go to Tuscany and drink some nice wine. Go to Pisa and see the Leaning Tower.

  4. Great gift!!  I agree.  FIRENZE and Venezia should be the better places to visit.  But you won't get lost in Venezia if you have a map- the street walls are all labeled with directions on how to get to the center of town.

Most people in northern Italy speak English, especially in popular cities and tourist towns.  But going south of Rome less people tend to understand English.

Venezia is very beautifil and romantic- every couple should go there at least once in their lives.  And FIRENZE is bursting with beautiful art, architecture and history; it's remarkable!  They will be awe-struck when they first see the massive church of Santa Maria Del Fiore (the famous Duomo) at the center of Florence.

And Sienna and San Gimignano are right there too!  Pisa is just an hour train ride away. And if you're going that direction, there is the world famous Cinque Terre, where they'll see the most gorgeous beaches in the world.

The off-season is WINTER, so you're in luck! Italy won't be like Disneyland in the winter.

  5. Lovely gift for your parents. Send them to a place of Romance. I would have to recommend Sienna, It's 1 hour train ride from Florence. It's a town that's not to crowded but not to small at the same time. you should look in to ticket 3 months in advance to get the best ticket prices. Go online and search the big travel sites. From experience Florence and Rome are the 2 places in italy i have been that most people you approach can speak english to a certain degree. It gets tougher once you go out to the county side. Should tell them to learn a few basic, trust me it will make a big difference.

  6. Florence by far and away!  I also like Milan, Genoa, Pisa, Lucca, and most places in Tuscany.

  7. Im not really sure what the "off season" in Italy is like, as I was there a while ago. But, Sienna is a very bueatiful little city. It is very historic. Mind you, it is very easy to get lost! Tuscany is a very beautiful provence - you go drving, and you can see, lets say, little old villages on top of hills. I drove to some, and the bread at the bakeries is amazing! San Guilimino is also a nice town (I think thats how you spell it). It has lots of towers, which were apparently built by rich families to show their "status". Rome and Florence and Pisa are your obvious cities. I found the tower of Pisa slightly over-rated (but the bakeries had really nice food :D). Florence and Rome were nice, though. However, they don't beat the small little villages and towns that  you discover when you drive around the countryside. Also, if your parents like nice views when there driving, its dissapointing to note how many tunnels there are through the northern alps, north of Italy. You hardly see the mountains because its pretty much tunnel after tunnel. But, the coastal drive on the west of italy is very nice, and it leads to Monnacco. There are a few tunnels on that costal drive, but they are really nice and historic, and theres not one after another.

  8. my house !!!

  9. Rome, Rome, Rome.  Also Florence.

  10. Italy's off season is early spring, late fall, and winter. Most Italians are fluent in English, so your ma and pa shouldn't have any problems. As for "ultimate experience" it depends on their interests. If they really love art, definitely Firenze. Same thing for history. If they love nightlife and busy city stuff then Roma or Milano. If they just want to be romantic, Venezia. But don't send them there in the off-season or you'll have momsicle and popsicle.  My two top recommendations are Firenze and Venezia. I loved them both, but be warned that they will get lost in Venezia. Its just part of the experience. Along with pigeons. And gondolas.

  12. Rome and/or Florence... English is spoken and the off season is the fall/winter.

  13. For my mom's 60th birthday I saved up and got them a trip to Italy through Trafalgar.  They really enjoyed it, the entire trip was arranged for them including guided tours, transportation, meals and even having their baggage carried/transported for them.  They also made some good friends in the tour group so I would recommend this route if you want to send them to Italy.
