  1. 1st of all where do you live? it'd be better if you could tell what type of holiday would you like to have...but anways, there's one place i can recommend to you which i know, from personal experience, is absolutely marvelous - MUSSOORIE!

Mussoorie, with its green hills & varied flora & fauna, is a fascinating hill resort. Commanding a wonderful view of extensive Himalyan snow ranges to the northeast, & glittering views of the Doon Valley, Roorkee, Saharanpur & Haridwar to the South, the town presents a fairyland atmosphere to the tourists. Its history dates back to 1827 when Captain Young, an adventurous military officer, explored the present site & laid the foundation of this holiday resort which now has few rivals. Mussoorie is famous for its scenic beauty and hectic social life. It provides all kinds of amusement & every facility for domestic & foreign tourists.

    Climate

At an altitude of over 6000 ft (2000m), Mussoorie is a popular retreat from the heat of the plains. Be prepared for the cold if you come in the Winter (Dec-Feb), when you can expect freezing weather and snow. The monsoon arrives in July and stays through mid-September.

    NATURE PARK

This Nature Park is located at Kempty Falls 12 Kms from Mussoorie the nearest Hill station (35 kms) to Dehra Dun the capital of the newly formed state of Uttaranchal now Uttarakhand which was a result of trifurcation of the large state of Uttar Pradesh. The need for this trifurcation arose as in a large state it had become difficult to devote attention to the development of this difficult Himalayan region which lacked good roads, drinking water, electricity, telecommunications and other amenities which have since improved.

Though Mussoorie has much to offer to the visitor, to keep him mentally occupied to enable him and his family to enjoy a long holiday, the nearest attraction with it's cool air and serenity is this small water fall called Kempty Falls. India is famous for it's large population as such nearly 20,000 visitors come to these falls per day during the peak season.

The Nature Park and Village Bhatoli offer a challenge to voluntary workers from the world over.People who feel concerned about the ecological dangers of the Himalayan region and those sympathetic to the concept of alleviating poverty in the world. The mountainous region however has the natural beauty, biggest rivers of the region which offer white water rafting, rock climbing, trekking and camping to the nature and adventure lover.

Once at the Nature Park you will see a camp site for visitors,a restaurant, a small photo-gallery *** Museum. Other attractions like an astro clock, an inflatable planetarium etc are on the cards. There is a small Shiv Temple too. Shiva the Lord of creation and destruction is symbolised by the Shiva Lingham and Godess Parvati's v****a( Jharni) the symbol denotes that all living beings originate from this you too!!Hence it is not humour but an actual fact and realisation.Lord Shiva's abode is the Himalayas and is the main diety for worship though there are other local deities too which carry a history and interesting stories.

    Get in

The reason why one should visit the park and camp there is to experience that part of the Himalayan countryside where till date trees are cut for fire to cook ones food and leaves collected to feed their cattle to run their milk based subsistence economy. How many plants are till date being exploited and not being replenished thereby ruining the habitat to support some fundamental lives of insects, butterflies, pheasants who survive on the food cycle. How the have nots live and how one can help them come out of this rut. This is an area for study of responsible tourism, responsible in more than one way. It is also an area to enjoy the rare cultures of the world which are specific to the region. This is perhaps the only part of the world where polyandry had been practiced till recent times. Some cases still exist!!Polyandry is when one woman simultaneously or intermittently marries more than one man usually five men based on the practice of the historical five Pandavas and their sole wife Dropadi.

Enjoy the solitude of the wilderness, meditation and yoga, white water rafting in the Yamuna, rock climbing river crossing and above all living with the country folk. These are the social and leisure aspects of one's visit to this area. The botanical, zoological and geological wealth has much for the environmentalist to come and study and help protect in the interest of global warming and protection Earth Rights. For those who wish to study disaster management in practice, this is the ideal place for them to come and camp at Nature Park and make trips around.

    By bus

Buses leave from Dehradun train station. There are two buses which go to opposite ends of the Mussoorie Mall, Library and Picture Palace. It is quite a hike from one to the other, so make sure you catch the right one. To reach Kempty Falls directly from Dehra Dun catch a bus from the Dehra Dun Railway station Hill Bus Services Section or take a taxi. One should look for buses heading for destinations like Barkot, Nainbagh, Yamunotri, and Purola (Caution:sometimes Purola buses go via Vikas nagar which may take you off the route completely so be careful). You can also take a bus to the Library end of Mussoorie and walk to the Kempty Bus stop and take a bus or taxi or a milkvan or even hitch a ride with a tourist going in that direction!! Bus fee for Library end or Kurli end (from Dehradun) is around INR30 (April 2008). Toll Tax is payable on entering Kempty Village per bus/taxi/car/scooter. Bus fare from library end to kempty is around INR15 (april 2008).

    By taxi

It is possible to hire a taxi for the trip up to Mussoorie. Rates should be around Rupees 400-550 but one can pay per seat as well in a shared taxi which normally accommodates upto five passengers.Shared or chartered taxis too are available near the same Hill Section Bus terminal and the rates are controlled by the taxi union. These rates are generally displayed on a board outside their office.
