  1. nicaragua its the safest country in central america its a known fact and trust me from experience but im not so sure about south america

  2. Colombia

I guarantee you that those who say things about the insecurity and the instability of Colombia have never actually been there.

Yes, there are paramilitary and drug-trafficking problems, and people living in destitution but you really don’t have to take any more precautionary measures in Colombia than you would have to in any other country.

No one ever mentions the magnificent lands, the wonderful culture or the extremely kind and friendly people that inhabit this beautiful country.. I can't stress this enough. Medellin has some very good universities and so does Cali and Bogota. It will be one of the best (and most fun) experience you will ever have.

  3. I've backpacked most of South America really never had a problem stay away from conflict areas. Darjen Gap, FARC controled regons,  Favellas in Brazil (all though I went but had no problems just be careful) All of South America is great. Dont worrie just use good judgement.....

  4. Montevideo (Uruguay), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Santiago (Chile) are very safe cities and great places to learn Spanish. I have walked around in the summer and they are thriving and residents are very friendly.

If you are studying Portuguese, most of Rio de Janiero is safe. Use caution at night when walking by the beach or dark alleys.

  5. no especulation, just formal information,

-The Economist Global Peace Index 2007- Santiago, Chile n° 16 over 98 nations. First of Latin America, and first GDP(PPP) of the region too. About studying http://www.puc.cl/webpuc/html/menuingles... best university in the country and dont let the "catholic name" fools you.

  6. Most of Peru is fairly safe, as long as you're careful.  I'd avoid the eastern slope of the Andes (narcotrafficantes), and Lima except for Barranco, Miraflores and the center.

Get a good travel guide like "Lonely Planet" and it will give you safety tips.

Peruvians are very nice people, and they will warn you if you're going someplace dangerous.

One important tip:  beware of "friendly strangers" and never accept a drink or something to eat from someone you don't know--it's often drugged.
