I was just thinking about a documentary about modern pirates. from australia to japan looks like a nice route with many big and small islands, but many people are still poor there, so how safe would be sailing there? what about mediterranean sea? and what are the risks to sail with an average sailboat and be attacked by the modern pirates?

  1. All I know is don't sail near Somalia... over 25 cruise ships have been taken hostage in those waters, most recently a French one

  2. Here are the latest report places where p****y has occured in 2008. The same places have been a big problem in previous years.

  3. The biggest place to avoid now is Somalia.  Though they tend to attack larger ships, They might be having a slow enough day to take a sailboat too.  The International community is beginning to address this, so hopefully the problem will abate.  The straits of Malacca are getting better, but are still a good place to avoid.

Poverty doesn't mean that high crime is inevitable.  The Mediterranean and Caribbean are fairly safe from what I understand.  Make sure you comply with local Customs regulations, and you should be fine.  Some areas expect you to have an "agent" to help you do your paperwork.  Ask for recommendations from people who've been through the area.

Read cruising guides too.  It won't be considered "p****y" if your ship is attacked while at anchor next to a high crime area, but that will be little condolence to whatever is left of your crew.  You'll of course want to stay away from these high crime areas too.  Fortunately, these hazards are fairly easy to get around.
