Which places are to be avoided for 2 girls moving/living in London?

My friend and I are moving to London to start a job in Fulham. I am looking for a place to live, and as Fulham is close to the river, accommodation is coming up south of the river. However I have heard rumours that south of the river is not the best place to live. Please help as I don't know London much. We want to be close to work aswell, so which are the nice affordable areas for 2 girls to rent in London. Please help me! Thank you!

Earl's Court is about a mile from Fulham. There is a lot of restaurants, and it's fairly urban (kind of a mix of g*y culture and expats). There are a lot of Australian expat's there.

  It would be a safe place to live and it be more interesting than living south of the river.

If you don't know about it, the Premier Travel Inn is a national budget chain where you can stay while you check out your long term apartments. There is a location near Fulham.
