I keep hearing that england is very windy, so is it good for sailing? are the seas almost always windy or is there a point when there's no wind at all for some time?

  1. You can find any kind of sailing in the world in SF bay.Would you believe 101mph winds at Angel Island. (happened in Dec., 1995, lost a boat in that blow.) It's a world class sailing mecca. I prefer lighter winds as apposed to high winds. Warm breezes to howling, freezing gales. Don't get me wrong, a gale will get the blood flowing. Ahh, the fun of sailing downwind under a blooper is so pretty. Pick your sailing windows for the wind you wish. But, sail in all. Even if there is none. That's time for wine and cheese. Soon, she'll blow!

  2. St. Pete and San Dog are excellent

  3. Hi,

West Coast of Scotland is excellent for Sailing - lots of good wind and fresh air. I learned to Sail around Oban - where I took my competent crew course.

    Enjoy!

  4. Generally locations in the trade winds will have conditions for sailing most of the year.

Check the charter company locations such as the Moorings and Sunsail.  They obviously select locations for their bases that are good for sailing.

Personally, my favorite is the Bahamas.

It's possible to have calm days anywhere.  Either sit back and enjoy it or fire up the engine.

I had one trip to the Bahamas where my engine died and spent two weeks sailing back through the islands and to Florida under sail only.

  5. Some places are definitively more windy than others *on average*. For example, San Francisco Bay is very windy from May to October, but pretty light during the winter.

Anyhow, I sailed for 2 years (from France to San Francisco) and there were days with lots of wind, days with none:

Anyway, I personally learned to sail in San Francisco Bay Area (3 weeks), bought a boat and went sailing for 2 years. Check my web site, there is one photo a day

  6. I believe St. Maarten in the Caribbean is known as one of the great sailing places in the world.
