Question:

Which planet is rising in the east every night lately?

I live in New Mexico USA, it comes up every night about 9pm MST. My children asked me which planet it is, can someone help me answer them?

  4. It is Jupiter.  It rises 4 minutes earlier each night, so in a few weeks it will be rising just around sunset.

    One very good site to see what is in the night sky is astronomy.com - they have a Your Sky Tonight section and you can enter the nearest large city to you and see which planets and brighter stars are in your sky.

  6. Lindajune is correct, it's Jupiter. Mars and Saturn are setting in the west about that time, and Venus is too close to the sun to be visible at present.
