  1. Inner = Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars. The asteroid belt seperates them from the outer planets. Outer =  Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and if you want... Pluto.

  2. My guess would be because the smaller inner planets and the larger planets are separated by an asteroid belt. The outer planets are also mostly made up of gas with no solid surface whereas the inner planets have a surface.

  3. mercury, venus, earth, and mars are the inner planets and Jupiter, saturn, uranus, and neptune are the outter planets.

they are grouped this way because the asteroid belt devideses the 2 sections (between mars and jupiter) and there is a difference in the way the planets are formed

(inner: all platets are terrestrial meaning that are rock solid.

outter: all the planets are Jovian meaning that they are made up of gas [gas giants])

  4. Inner planets are mercury, venus, earth, Mars.  Then after thats its the outers Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto (debate as to whether it should still be a planet).

The reason they grouped them is because the inner planets are made of rock and the outer planets are made of mainly Gas..(until you get to Pluto of course).but also becasue they just wante a "cut off point" for inner and outer planets so it was easier to group them this way.
