  1. With a bit of sophisticated technology we can convert almost any plant matter to bio-oil and use it in a diesel engine. We could harvest millions of tons of sea weed and make oil from it.

But if this was a low tech process it was likely one of the oil-seeds, be that oilseed rape, soy, mustard, flax, cottonseed etc.

Other than for mustard the seed would also have a food value after the oil is extracted. We are using soy as our primary oil source mostly because the non-oil component of the soy bean is so valuable... the oil is almost a by-product.

Where cotton seed is available it is also a cheap source because we grow it mostly for the cotton.

Cotton seed oil ignites at a high temperature compared to most other oils, so it works best in diesels with very high compression ratios.

Oilseed rape burns at a low temperature, so is best for lower compression diesels or diesels operating in very cold environments.

There are non-seed plant parts that have oil in them, like coconut husks, but so far volumes available have not been significant.

  2. No plant uses petrol, but petrol can be derived from some plants either from their oil or sugars.

  3. when you say "plants" do you mean factory's? if so you are probably referring to the growing use of oil from oil palms as an industrial fuel in parts of Asia. this is also called bio diesel.

& is used instead of diesel fuel made from petroleum.

if this is not what your referring to then I dont understand the question.

  4. Jatropha is being widely cultivated in Asia to produce bio-diesel commercially. This has been identified as a viable alternative to fossil fuels. Companies like Mercedes-Benz are running extensive tests on cars running on bio-diesel.

You can check this site for more info:

    Hope this helps.

  5. Any plant oil can be used to make biodiesel. There is a nut that grows in India that is 50% oil by weight. That oil has been burned in lamps for years. Research is in the early stages to grow it in the U.S. for biodiesel production. Most commercially produced biodiesel today is made from soybeans. Soy's value as a food crop makes it expensive for fuel.

  6. Daryll Hannah "created" grass-olene... you guessed it, made from grass! Anything can move your car if you've got the know-how and the money... its just so expensive.

  7. Just about any plant can produce biodiesel. Corn can make ethanol.

  8. No idea
