Paatelainen played for Dundee United against Celtic in the 1988 final, he turned out for Aberdeen against Rangers in the 1993 final and against Celtic for Hibs in 2001. Sadly for Mixu, he lost them all. His bad luck was not confined to Scotland. In 1995, he played for Bolton Wanderers against Liverpool in the English League Cup Final, needless to say, they lost.
