Two players who have been compared before & you think the comparison is way off.

It can be a retired player to another retired player, a current player to a current player or a current player to a retired player... Whatever you want. :) I'm not very strict about my questions! haha.

  1. I don't compare current players to long-past players...

Mainly because I wasn't alive back then, and I wouldn't be able to make a fair assessment.

Mostly I just don't like it when a young player has a really good season and people start comparing them to greats like Ty Cobb or Sandy Koufax or something like that.

One season does not make a career.  When that young player retires and STILL has great stats, come back and ask then.

  2. A-Rod being compared to any Yankee Great is way off.

A-Rod needs to produce when it counts too

  3. Although it seems to have died down a bit now, the comparisons of Ankiel to Babe Ruth drive me absolutely crazy. Guess most of them have no clue that Ruth was actually one of the better pitchers of his era who became an everyday player because of his incredible hitting ability, as compared to Ankiel , who became a position player simply because he was a horrible pitcher. (Not to mention the fact that he won't even come close to being the hitter Ruth was.)

  4. Honestly it bothers me whenever there is a comparison of players who hit or pitch, when its between one that played 100 years ago, to one to plays now.  The game has changed since then.  I can in all honesty say, that if babe ruth in his prime was playing now, he would be in the minors.  The game of baseball has stayed pretty even, defense and offense has stayed very consistant, but that doesnt mean they both didnt improve.  There is a reason why hitters cant hit .400 anymore, and pitchers cant get a 1.12 era, the talent has grown.

Not a player to player comparison, but when media compared the brewers/cubs rivalry to the redsox/yankees rivalry, it got me a little mad.  Completely ignoring the cubs/cards rivalry is a little odd.

Edit: Christ, how could i forget this one?  Its not baseball, but you have to get a kick out of Ocho Cinco saying he could out-race Michael Phelps, hahahahahahahahaha.

"Where I'm from -- Liberty City -- I know a couple of people who can beat Michael Phelps right now. Seriously. I'm telling you. And I'm one of 'em."

  5. Pins is right about Varitek, He's a great player but he is no Carlton Fisk.

That's like People comparing Ryan Howard to Mike Schmidt...Don't make Me laugh Ya know?

  6. yunel escobar to jose reyes

  7. Personally i am going to go with a comparison that I am sure you will hate me for. I disagree with the Varitek-Fisk comparison.

Here is why, being a captain is a very important job and i understand that. I do believe though that being a captain is a completely different thing and it should not be used when comparing two players. Pretend i was to compare Derek Jeter and say........Alex Rodriguez in who was more valuable to the team in a certain year or even their career. In an argument between the two i would not use the fact that Jeter was captain as a boost for Jeter. I probably wouldn't mention it.

I am sure that the redsox would have been able to win at least one of the two world series' without Varitek and I am also sure that besides his AMAZING leadership skills and the fact that he has a giant "C" on his jersey he would not be that important to the team. His stats aren't that impressive but if he could hit 300 a year with 15 homers and 60 RBIs those are fine. Fiskworthy? NO!

    Lets look at the careers.....

CARLTON FISK: 11X all star, 376 home runs, TWO numbers retired, gold glove, and most importantly he is a hall of famer.

JASON VARITEK: will finish with at most 230 home runs, 3X All Star, not a hall of famer, 1 gold glove.

Stats wise Fisk is over 1000X better.

In importance to the team I still believe that Fisk is 10X more important because besides the leadership skills Varitek doesn't bring much to the table. He is good at defense and an OK hitter, but nothing too special. Fisk was a VERY valuable hitter.

I am not in any way doubting the importance of being a leader. Every team needs one. But when push comes to shove would you rather have the leader or the guy who will get the job done?

As for current i will say Cliff Lee-Brandon Webb.

Webb is a proven near-veteran while Cliff Lee is having an amazing year- AN amazing year. Lee has not proven himself to me or anyone yet as a reliable starter of the future. Year in and year out that is all that Webb does.

ALSO: To Joba Chamberlain Jr.: I am actually embarassed to see a yankees fan with that name and that answer. Go frenchy larue!

Cmon Redsox fans: Bring on the thumbs down!

  8. I remember when Fonzy came off the DL we were playing the D-Backs. The announcers were comparing Augie Ojeda to Carlos Beltran.

  9. Phil Hughes to Roger Clemens.

  10. hey dude im a yankees fan and ian kennedy almost threw a no hitter at triple a.. i agree with u on moose tho. he is a great pitcher. keepin the yankees alive this year
