I know that having a lot of pixels does not necessarily make the best pictures, and that optics play an equally large part. I just want to know how far they have come in pocket cameras. thanks

  1. somewhere about 6 megapixels is all you need on a small pocket camera what is more important is lens quality, something like carl zeiss look at sony you cant go wrong.

  2. There are 15mp point and shoot cameras out there...but 15mp are a waste in a point and shoot, seeing as that variety of camera just does not generally have the required optics to make use of that many megapixels.  The exceptions, of course, are Nikon Coolpix series point and shoot cameras, which use Nikkor lenses (or glass as it is called).  If you're planning on buying a high megapixel p&s grab a Coolpix.

  3. you can now get a 12 meg for less than 150 pounds
