I know a little about pool, but not enough. I am interested in buying a pool cue case for someone (a guy) who has been playing seriously for years. The case he has is old and may hold some value, but thought about getting him one for his birthday... not too soon. However, I do not know anything about it. I know I need a 3 butt/5shaft case. but other than that I don't have any idea what he may like. Any ideas?? please!!! only if you KNOW something about this! Thank you

  1. cue case has two type... soft case and hard case....soft case is lighter and cheaper  while hard case is heavier and more expensive... Most manufacturer produce both soft and hard case....  Soft case is commonly made of vinyl while hard case is made of  either higher quality plastic or animal skin ( that's why hard case is expensive).....Soft case often  has capacity of  1B1S or 1B2S while harder case has capacity ranging from 2B2S to 4B8S....  Cue cases carrying strap tend to rip off if you  full load your cases, that's  the reason why higher capacity case were made of animal skin for weight tolerance......   Instroke is one of the most popular brand....Instroke commonly use animal skin to produce case...they even make both lower and higher capacity cases for better costumer satisfaction....  When buying beware of imitation.....

P.S.  I have experience of using both soft and hard case ...so I know about this.....I use soft case made from Japanese brand Mezz.....and finally I shift to Instroke made of animal skin... and I love it....I

  2. Instroke cases are popular and good. I'm providing a link to a case I think most anyone would like; it doesn't have a pouch for the jump cue butt like Johnny mentioned, but if he has a jump cue, it'll probably fit in the long zippered compartment on the front of the case.  I like the black, but you'd know better what he'll like :) There are also several other styles available on the website. Happy shopping!

Hey Matt, it says specifically on the description that there's no pouch for the jump cue, and on my case (which is Corey Deuel, not Instroke), my jump cue butt just barely fits in that compartment, and if I have anything floating around on the bottom, I have to rearrange it before putting the butt in...so I think that may be what most people use it for, but not what it's designed for, right?...I could be wrong of course, but that's what makes sense to me...

p.s. My husband had an Instroke case and the jump cue wouldn't fit all the way in the front pouch; he zipped it most of the way shut but it stuck out a little bit.

  3. Lea, the long pouch in the front is mainly for your jump cue butt.

I second the Instroke recommendation. They are very well built and have several choices in different price ranges.

If money is no object you could go for a custom cue case like the ones in the link below. Google "custom cue cases" and you should find a few more brands.

  4. I too highly recommend Instroke cases. They have a lot of different cases too choose from and I personally have never seen one that wasn't made well.  I've had my Instroke cowboy 2 butt 3 shaft case for a long time now and I wouldn't trade it for anything. It's a little battle scarred but that just adds some character to it , still protects my cues very well. this brings me to a question. Are you sure that this guy needs or wants a new case? I would hate to see you invest all that money in something that won't get used. Like I said , my case is old and a little beaten up but If someone bought me a new one I think it would probably just sit and collect dust because I really like my old one. Anyway ,you can't really go wrong with Instroke cases. You can usually find them on sale on the internet ,just type in'' Instroke cases''on a google or yahoo search  or like Johnny said try Ebay. Good luck!

  5. I would like to see something I buy, so I would just go to a billiards store, and find out what they have, you touch it, you check and compare, and you are done with it. a sales person can guide you, or you can see the one that is right for you.

  6. Mine is 4-Butt 6 Shaft -with a jump stick butt pouch

I got it off ebay for around $100

You may want to ck them out-But for hand tooled leather more like $400 . just depends on his taste in cases

If you go to ebay Carls-Cues has a lot of them but so do a few others get him to hint what he likes if your gonna spend a bundle

  7. A cue case should provide two kinds of protection. Obviously protection against damage, but consideration should be given to heat, and humidity. Search a few websites dedicated to the avid pool player...Mucchi(sp) may be a good start. They make some of the best cues around.

  8. I'm also going to go with Instroke.  M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.

  9. Lea got it. I was going to recommend Instroke too. Of course there are many good cases and other manufacturers are probably as good. My first Instroke was made of vinyl and after 10 years the material started to crack in several places. My current one is the 3 butt 5 shaft from the buffalo leather series and I am really happy with it. I got it online from http://www.seyberts.com/ with a good discount.

Edit: Since the discussion seems to turn that way I should maybe mention that it does have an extra jump butt pocket.
