  2. McDermott and Viking are reputable pool cue manufacturers. I have owned a pool cue from each. My preference and that of pros and others here should not matter. It is not best to choose a cue based its brand name or its popularity. The main thing that should matter is how well you like how the cue plays for you. And shooting with the cue before buying it is the only way to know this. You very well could find a cue in your price range and of your liking from a variety of pool cue makers.

However, in this price range and especially since you hope to keep this cue for a long time, it is critical that you pay particular attention to the manufacturer's warranty. Specifically, be certain to determine its warranty against warping and whether your warranty is voided if you have the cue's tip changed. Contact the manufacturer and be certain you understand the warranty's provisions and exclusions.

I refer you to the pool / billiards forum at billiardsdigest.com for additional assistance.

  3. I like McDermott personally.

Don't buy off of a website. You need to buy the right size/weight in ounces that suites you & feels comfortable using. & roll it on a pool table to make sure it's straight before you buy it. You can't do all that buying off the internet.

Just a tip. Make sure the wrap on the butt has a clear coat over it. I find the ones without the clear coat sometimes unravel.

Hard case too, not soft (as in the flimsy ones). Hard protects the cue better

Check out pool hall in your area. If they don't sell them, they should be able to tell you who does.

  4. Of the 2 I'd go viking.  Not sure how it is now, but the quality control at mcdermott went way down a few years back and people were getting shipments of cues with warped shafts right from the factory.  For the decent first cue in that price range either of those 2 will be good for you.  Make sure you buy the cue from a place where you can hit some balls with it first so you can find one you like the feel of.  If they don't let you hit balls with it first, tell them to stick it.  Good luck, and keep rackn em up!

  5. Both are pretty equal quality-wise. To say McDermott's quality is down is ridiculous. McDermott added a lifetime warranty against warpage a few years ago, and Viking matched it to keep up. Of the two, I personally prefer the hit of McDermott, but that's all personal preference.

The best thing to do is to go to a local dealer and try them out. Even if you want to but online to save money of whatever, you're doing yourself a disservice by not trying them both.

I've bought several things from Seyberts.com and they've always been excellent.

  6. I like McDermott personally (I've owned five), but I don't have much experience with Viking.  Both have great warranties (just make sure you buy from an authorized retailer) but McDermott throws in a great lifetime maintenance plan.  I think the quality will be similar in a given price range.

  7. Viking cues have been around alot longer and more pros use them. I use a Viking cue and absolutely love it...wouldn't use anything else.......the service is great also. At www.vikingcues-billiardwarehouse.com they offer discount prices as well as free shipping.

  8. These are my two favorites also but I shoot with McDermott.  I like the way they feel.  I don't think you will go wrong with either brand

  9. I prefer Viking over Mcdermott. I have been shooting with their cues for years. You might have to pay more for a decent cue from both of these companies though. Ebay has some great deals on pool cues.

  10. If I had to take a choice between M or V I'd go with the M.

At the end of the day it's really whatever you like and feel most comfortable with.

My best cue came from here. I think they make the best cues period.
