  1. Id say Washington for establishing the idea of a two term limit to keep the presidency from becoming a monarchy


  2. I would say Thomas Jefferson played a very significant role in establishing the ground rules of our government, including much of the Constitution.

  3. In the 1860s, Abrahama Lincoln set the first steps in motion for right to vote for blacks, even though that was only partially implemented for many decades.

    In 1918, Woodrow Wilson changed his mind and decided to support a constitutional amendment giving women the right to vote. This gave the necessary impetus for the passage of the 19th amendment in 1920.

    In the 1960s, Lyndon Johnson maneuvered the South into supporting civil rights legislation.

    In terms of purely democratic advancement, nothing is more fundamental than the right to vote. Therefore, I think these lead the pack.
