I just bought a used 1995 bayliner 1854. I bought it at sea level in california but plan on using it on a lake at approximately 6000 ft in elevation. I took it out just to cruise around for a bit and it had rouble going over 3000 rpm and took a while to plane out. I know i need to get a prop with a different pitch and was wondering if anyone had any ideas that would help. Thanks a lot.

  1. The water density isn't going to change that much at 6000 feet, your engine is what is going to cause you the grief.  The higher you are, the less horsepower you put out.  You may need to re-jet the carb. (Unless it is fuel injected, if so, that should be automatically done).

After you have tried that, you still may not be pushing out the same Horsepower as at sea level, and you may need to get a prop with a step lower in pitch that equates to power verses speed to get your boat up on step, but the prop you have may work very well at sea level, so don't throw it away!

    Good luck and have fun!

  2. This is one of those local knowledge questions.  I'm guessing a 2000 rpm drop is twice what I'd expect.  So, ask at a local dealer what similar boats`are doing.  I'm thinking you can improve some, but not to the point of pulling a skier.
