Question:

Which racket is ideal for me?

I've been playing for about two months with a beginner's racket (purchased for about $20 at a sporting goods store). I've been hitting so many long balls and I'm sick of it. I need a racket with lots of control. I have tried out the Prince O3 White and Prince O3 Speedport White at 58 lbs, but neither had as much control as I was hoping for. Any suggestions on a racket with a good amount of control? Prince and Babolat are preferred.

At this point, I don't feel like I need an expensive racket, although I am willing to spend up to 200 dollars. I just need one that will provide a lot of control with less power. I like to hit the ball hard and when I'm on the courts, I'm terrified of how far or high my shots go. I want to be able to hit the ball without worrying how far it will go.

  1. i found that if the racket feels alright after using it 2 times, its probably the best for you.  every new racket will feel weird at first, but once you get used to it you will be alot happier. as far as control goes, ask a local proshop about strings.  theres many different types of strings that have different strenghts and weaknesses.  also ask the proshop about the tension they are going to string the racket.  different tensions mean either more power and less control, or more control and less power.  good luck

  2. Heavier rackets are generally better for control although they can take a little bit of getting used to. Try buying a role of lead tape (not expensive) and add strips around the head of the racket. This will allow you to slowly get used to the added weight. If you're on a bit of a budget have a hunt for some older rackets eg Prince Shark or the older style Babolat Pure drive. You could also try stringing it differently. Ask your local pro shop about the different types of strings and stringing tensions. All of these different methods will help you gain more control.

  3. try a racket with a smaller head size. for instance Roger Federer's old racket. the only problem is that it is a little expensive.

  4. Try the Prince Speedport PRO White, its the heavier-more control oriented version of the Speedport White; I wanted this racquet so badly. Just look at Jelena Jankovic, on YouTube, only her matches from the 2008 season. It's great if you love taking big groundstrokes/shots, but the only difficulty is adjusting to the heavy weight, and serving--but playing more with this racquet can help.
